Coed 4's Volleyball Rules
The following rules are subject to amendment or revision by RRC. The RRC rules are adapted from the Official USA Volleyball Rules with some exceptions.
Timing and Scoring Regulations
A match shall consist of 3 games during the regular season. Standings will be based on the number of games won, not the number of matches won.
A game is over when one team scores 21 points. The winning team must have at least a two-point advantage. If a 21-20 score exists, play will continue until one team wins by 2 points. Games cap at 27 points.
Games will be rally scored (a.k.a. quick scoring). Points are awarded on every serve.
Ro Sham Beaux (Rock Scissors Paper) best out of 3 will be done between the two opposing captains. The winner has the choice of: serving the first game or choosing which court to start on. At the beginning of each of the next 2 games the roles are reversed.
The serve is the act of putting the ball into play by the right back-row player who hits the ball with one hand or arm from the service zone (anywhere beyond the back line and within the two sidelines).
General courtesy is to announce serve & score before serving to putting the ball in play.
Serves may be underhand, overhand or participants may attempt to jump serve.
The players of the serving team must not screen the opponents from seeing the contact for service or the path of the ball. This would include a player waving arms, jumping up and down, or moving sideways at the time of the serve. The serving team is also prohibited from making a collective screen when the server is hidden behind two or more teammates and the ball is served over them.
Blocking and attacking (see Attack hits section) the serve is illegal.
Only one serve is allowed, but players may drop a bad toss once and still serve (there are no re-serves).
Faults on the serve may occur when:
- ball hits a teammate
- ball is passed under the net
- ball goes out of bounds.
Team players must rotate serve.
Legal and Illegal Hits
The ball must be cleanly hit. *Note: feet may be used to contact a ball in outdoor play.
The following constitutes a legal hit:
- Contacting the ball with the heels of the hands, fists, or arms.
- A closed fist punching at the ball.
The following constitutes illegal hits:
- Ball visibly comes to rest
- Held ball
- Successive contacts
- Using fingers for underhand hit
- Attacking the serve
When setting the ball over the net, shoulders must be square to the direction of the set.
The following are types of faults that result in a point to the opposing team:
- A player touching the top tape of the net. A player may touch the bottom netting as long as it does not interfere with play. Any net touch interfering with play is a dead ball fault.
- Hand or hands over top into opponents side of net in hitting ball.
- A player takes support from a teammate or any object in order to reach the ball.
- A team contacts the ball four times or more before returning it to the opponents.
- Catching or throwing the ball. The ball must be tapped.
- Serve out of turn. (Loss of points scored by ineligible server.)
- A player reaches over the plane of the net to spike or to block.
- NO LIFTS OR DOUBLE CONTACTS: A player contacts the ball twice in succession or the ball contacts various parts of the player's body successively.
- A player receives personal warning.
- NO open hand tipping. You can use your palms or knuckles to get the ball over OR any open hand spike.
A ball touched by a player, playing close to the net, and attempting to block a shot by an opponent, shall not be counted as one of the three contacts permitted by his team. He/she may block the shot and play the ball before a teammate touches the ball. If two players block the ball simultaneously, this will count as one hit.
A joust (two players on opposing teams blocking the ball simultaneously) will result in a play-on of the point.
All actions directing the ball toward the opponent, except a serve or block, are attack-hits.
- An attack-hit is completed the moment the ball completely crosses the vertical plane of the net or is touched by a blocker.
- Restrictions to a back-row player:
- A back-row player may complete an attack-hit at any height from behind the front zone.
- A back-row player may also carry out an attack-hit from the front zone if at the moment of the contact any part of the ball is below the top of the net. i.e. anyone can hit anywhere (there really is no front row or back row players still must serve in the same order.)
Timeouts and Substitutions
Substitutions may be made anytime the ball is dead. There is no limit on subs.
Each team is allowed only 1 one-minute time out per game. Time-outs may be requested anytime the ball is dead.
Teams must be ready to play by 15 minutes past the hour. If a team shows up more than 5 minutes after match designated start time, a point is lost for each minute beyond the 5 minutes that team is late. A full game forfeit occurs for every 15 minutes a team is late.
Additionally, a team must notify your league manager (email@example.com for Rec OR firstname.lastname@example.org for Comp) at least 2-hours prior to a no-show. If a 2-hour notice is not given, that team will forfeit that match plus lose an additional 3 points.
Center Line Fouls
A player may cross under the net into the opponent's side as long as he doesn't interfere with the play and doesn't create a dangerous situation.
Playoffs are subject to change depending on the number of teams registered. The RRC Volleyball playoff tournament brackets will be announced prior to the end of the regular season.
Protests and Appeals
All decisions of the RRC Sports Committee are final.
- Teams must have at least 2 females on the court at all times, unless they only have one female present (then they would play 1m/1f). Teams cannot play 2 males with 1 female. (unless approved by opposing team.)
- There are no positional faults in 4-man volleyball. A player can be at any location in the court at anytime, i.e. you don't have to rotate positions (although you do have to keep "rotation" order for serves). Also, you can block or hit from any position on the court, i.e. there is no penalty for backrow hitting.
- No open hands dinks. When contacting the ball with one hand, it must be cleanly hit with the heel or palm of the hand (a roll shot), with straight, locked fingertips (a cobra), knurled fingers or the back of the hand from the wrist to the knuckles. One-handed placement or redirection of the ball with the fingers (a dink or open hand tip) is a fault.
- Open hand digs are okay.
