Take the Back Seat

"Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."

Philippians 2: 3-4

2018 is in the books and it’s that time again where we look forward to all the things we want to accomplish, achieve, fix, change, or grow in the coming year! Let me challenge you to make sitting in the backseat a goal for 2019. What on earth does that mean? I suppose the example comes from a leader in my past. This leader led in many ways, but one in particular that stands out to me is probably the simplest of examples; he always gave up the front seat. It was something so small, but such a constant reminder that in order to lead and be effective in others’ lives, you must first put them before yourself.

"Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Matthew 20: 28

So, what does that look like in your life? Only you can answer that through prayer and asking God to reveal this to you. For some of us it may be as simple as buying a coffee for somebody, for others it may be spending time and investing in a co-worker. Giving up your front seat can represent anything in your life that challenges you to put somebody else first.

Giving up your front seat can be something so small, but will change your life. Living with the attitude that we are called to reflect the life that Jesus gave us, is all about the little things all around us every day. As 2019 is welcomed in, find those small sacrifices that will not only lift others’ up, but also draw you nearer to the one that first gave His front seat to you.

1. Prayer for God to reveal areas that you can honor and lift up others around you.

2. Write down what the Lord reveals to you and set action steps.

3. Thanksgiving that He has provided ways for you to grow in your faith and show His glory in how you live your life and honor His children.

Father, open our eyes to the people you have surrounded us with. Show us where we can invest in others and be used as vessels for your glory. Father, let others see you in how we live our lives and put others before ourselves. All the glory to you, in the beautiful name of your son Jesus Christ.
